frequently asked questions

What is an IBCLC?

IBLCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. All IBCLCs have demonstrated an average of 1,000 clinical hours and completed at least 90 hours of advanced lactation education.  An IBCLC is also required to sit for an initial exam, and recertify every five years (to ensure he/she is up to date on all information and practices).   The credential is considered the gold standard for lactation consultants and is the only credential recognized by hospitals and most insurance companies for reimbursement.

Will insurance pay for my consultation?

Insurance can be complicated sometimes, but checking your benefits is easy. Click here and complete step 1 to learn if your plan covers visits with us. Within 24 hours, you should receive an email stating whether your insurance plan covers visits with Indy Lactation Care.

What is the Lactation Network and Wildflower?

The Lactation Network (TLN) is an insurance billing company for lactation businesses. They will never ask you for money and they can not schedule appointments.

What is Milk Notes?

Milk Notes is our scheduling and charting system. This is a HIPPA-compliant site that allows us to store your medical records. When you are scheduled, you will receive an email from Milk Notes that will allow you to access your account, sign consent, and view care plans.

How soon will I be able to get an appointment?

We are a busy and growing business and do our best to see families as soon as possible. Most in-home visits are within 2-5 days of the request for an appointment. If you need to be seen sooner, we have the option for a clinic or virtual visit to troubleshoot issues and get you help sooner rather than later, followed by the next available in-home appointment time.

Will Medicaid pay for my consultation?

Medicaid does not cover consultations with  ILC, but we offer a discounted price to be seen in our clinic. It is $95 for Medicaid clients and $50 for families with Medicaid and WIC.

Where is your clinic located?

Our clinic is inside the office of Indy Myofascial Release at 8770 Commerce Park Pl. Ste E  Indianapolis, IN. This is near 86th and Michigan Road/465 on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

Can I pay with my HSA or FSA card?

Absolutely!  You can use your HSA card to pay for any consultation, travel fee or class.

Do you get money for referring me to a specialist?

We have a network of like-minded professionals (Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Dentists, ENT Doctors, Speech therapists, Body Workers, and Chiropractors) that guide parents on an as-needed basis. We receive no compensation for referrals.

I know you help with breastfeeding, but do you help with bottle feeding or other issues?

We sure do! Our consultants have received continuing education in oral assessment, tongue ties, suck training, bottle refusal, infant allergies/sensitivities, introduction to solids, perinatal mood disorders, breast refusal, relaxation, and more!

I received my EOB, and it says I owe the balance! What does this mean?

Your EOB (estimation of benefits) shows what the Lactation Network or Wildflower billed your insurance for your visit and what they paid. Usually, there is a balance. And that balance can be a big, scary number. Don't worry! We will never ask you to pay us anything beyond what your insurance has agreed to pay. Likewise, TLN or Wildflower will never bill you, either.

How do I prepare for my visit? What should I expect?

Consultations usually take 60-90 minutes because there is a lot to cover! There are some things you can do to prepare for your visit and make our time together more productive and seamless. You can read more about how to get ready for your in-home, clinic or virtual visit here.

Do I need a prenatal lactation visit? What does it include and does insurance cover?

We find that moms who meet with their consultant prenatally have more confidence as they approach breastfeeding with knowledge and resources already on board. A prenatal consultation will be covered if your plan is in-network with ILC. It is usually 60-90 minutes and includes anything from "the basics of breastfeeding", a review of your past breastfeeding experience, a discussion of your goals, answers to all your questions, pump instructions/flange fitting, and whatever else you need.

After my visit can I contact my consultant with questions?

Yes, we encourage you to contact your consultant via email or text (according to her preference) if you have any questions or concerns. Sometimes, questions can be addressed with a quick response or virtual visit. Complex situations will require a follow-up visit.

Do you rent breast pumps or baby scales?

At this time, we do not rent equipment. However, we do try to help mom resource equipment by borrowing when possible.

Why is there a travel fee for my in-home visit if I have insurance coverage?

Insurance covers the consultation services but does not reimburse travel or travel time to clients' homes. We sometimes travel up to an hour or more round trip to work with a family, and the travel fee makes it possible for our consultants to continue in their work.
