Why an IBCLC for breastfeeding support?

 Many new mothers are truly unaware there is help out there when it comes to breastfeeding.  In fact, fewer new moms actually know there are nurses who have been specially trained in this field.  The initials IBCLC stands for an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.  An IBCLC is the only recognized professional breastfeeding qualification.  All IBCLCs have demonstrated an average of 1,000 clinical hours and completed at least 90 hours of advanced lactation education.  An IBCLC is also required to sit for an initial exam, and recertify every five years (to ensure he/she is up to date on all information and practices).   The credential is considered the gold standard for lactation consultants and is the only credential recognized by hospitals and most insurance companies for reimbursement.   The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential identifies a knowledgeable infant feeding specialist and experienced member of the maternal-child health team who has specialized clinical skills in breastfeeding management and care.   It is a comfort to many mothers to know they are trusting their care, and their baby, to the best of the best when it comes to Lactation Consultants.
